Why I’ll Be At #WorldFit Day!

Whether we like it or not (and most of us don’t), fitness is a crucial part of our lives. It ensures that we remain healthy, properly functioning, and most importantly, alive. Don’t let the skinny frame fool you — I’m not a fitness buff. I was at one point a few years ago, though. I would be in the gym five days out of the week, cardio for at least an hour and perhaps some weights.
I’m a runner at heart. Always have been; always will be. Whenever I run, which, as of today was about 2 months ago (before that it was about 11 months), I always run at least four miles. I swear I don’t know how to run anything shorter unless I’m sprinting. Weights and classes and all that “extra” stuff were never really my thing. I wanted to use the two legs God gave me and cover some ground.
Yet running, no matter how much I did, never got me that six pack that I so badly wanted. Then late one night, I found the solution! P90X! After seeing about 18 commercials for it, I convinced myself that it could work for me. So I ordered it about a year ago. And I got. And I still have it. It’s at home, sitting in it’s box. Waiting for me to use it.
But my procrastination on P90X isn’t the point. The point is this — you need an all around, lifestyle based approach to be healthy and fit. You can’t just go to the gym 5 times a week and then eat whatever you want (believe me, I was crushed when I found this out). You need diet and exercise. But it also helps to have a friend, a partner, a buddy, to push and motivate you when you feel like giving up, or even to help get started.
That’s why classes are great. Although they’ve never been my thing, I’m still a huge advocate for them. Then I found out about the biggest fitness class ever — World Fitness Day. You don’t know what I’m talking about? Perfect. Let me explain. No, better yet, watch this short video and it will tell you about better than I could.
So that looks exciting and stuff (probably to those a bit older than me, but everyone knows those folks), right? Jane Fonda, Billy Blanks, Denise Austin, and Richard Simmons? Everyone knows who they are and how enthused about fitness they are! To get the change to workout with them is pretty cool in my book.
But here’s something even cooler — it’s all for a good cause (besides you getting yourself in shape). The day will benefit G-CAPP, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. Their goal is, “to eliminate adolescent pregnancy in Georgia by developing, establishing and supporting ideas and programs that build local and statewide capacity to promote the healthy development of our most vulnerable adolescent.”
I won’t bore you with any specifics beyond that it’s this Saturday, May 1, from 8:30am until noon at the Georgia Dome and registration is only $12.50 to $37.50. (remember, it’s for a good cause). You can check out all the details right here, on G-CAPP’s website. (And in case you can’t get there, it will also be UStream-ed live into your kitchen or living room or wherever your computer happens to be. (But I wouldn’t recommend trying to exercise in the bathroom. Trust me.)
Before you start looking at me like, why is he talking about all this like he’s getting paid to, rest assured, I’m not. (And if I was, I would certainly tell you.) The reason is really simple — I hate, with a passion, for people to be unnecessarily unhealthy. Lord knows I am not the healthiest individual on the planet, especially when it comes to food, but I’ve learned that becoming healthy is a journey. A journey that’s much better (and easier) when you’ve got other people walking with you. And a journey that, like every journey, begins with one step. So come on! Go register, and come out and join me this Saturday. Heck, you might even see me in some shorts! I said might. (Wait, that might be a deterrent. Nevermind. I’ll be wearing pants.)

That's because you're young. In about 10 years you will be wishing for the metabolism that you have now (because I know that you can eat!).
